ACC Corner – Tom Wright, ACC Chairman
Fall is the time for outside maintenance.
As the weather turns cooler, there’s no time like the present to touch up outdoor paint, winterize faucets and more.
· Mow the leaves, fertilize the lawn
· Tune up your heating system
· Clean the dryer vent
· Pack up the patio gear
· Replace weather stripping
· Clean the chimneys
Most winter jobs do not require permits aside from painting. The ACC committee has a library of trades that have done work within our neighborhood. Give us a call if you need some help finding the right person. Be safe and be mindful that snakes are still active in the month of November.
Let us help you navigate through the permit process.

Under this proposed budget, member dues would remain unchanged at $290 per year. Members are encouraged to review the budget and refer any questions or concerns to the office.

CAROLINA SHORES POA HOLIDAY PARTY 2023
This year, the POA Holiday Party will be held at the Elks Lodge, 2679 Carter Drive, in Calabash.
Due to the occupancy capacity of the Elks, two separate parties will be held – Friday, December 8 and Saturday, December 9. The time for each party is from 5:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m. Happy Hour is from 5:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. and a plated dinner will be served at 6:00 p.m. Seating is limited to 130 people for each date. The cost is $10.00 per person for residents. Guest tickets are $20.00 and are limited to one per household with at least one resident attending.
Tickets will be sold on a first come, first served basis. Each resident must come in person to pick up their own ticket or tickets for their household or guest. In order to accommodate our numbers, tables will be set for parties of 8.
Tickets will be available Monday through Friday, from 10:00 a.m. until noon, starting Monday, November 6, through Friday, November 17, or until the maximum number of tickets is sold. An additional Saturday, November 11, is being added to accommodate those who may not be able to pick up their tickets during the week. Ticket sales will take place in the POA clubhouse at a table manned by recreation committee members/volunteers. Tickets will not be distributed from the POA office.
Elks Lodge policy requires that the first and last names of each person attending must be provided to the club prior to the event. Therefore, each individual purchasing tickets, either for themselves or their household, will be asked to provide the first and last names of attendees. If bringing a guest, that guest’s first and last name must also be provided please.
Since this will be a sit-down, plated dinner, there are two (2) choices of entrees:
- 6 oz. Filet Mignon served with baked potato and vegetable
- Flounder stuffed with lump crabmeat served with potato and vegetable
(All dinners include salad and rolls and dessert)
The cash bar begins at 5:00 p.m. Music will be provided by DJ Jay Kinlaw, who has entertained us at our Happy Hours, picnics, and Holiday parties.
In summary, when coming to purchase your tickets for yourself or your household, please be prepared to provide payment along with the following:
- Evening you wish to attend
- Food selection you desire
- First and last names of each attendee and/or guest
Please keep in mind that NO EXCHANGES OR DINNER CHOICE CHANGES WILL BE POSSIBLE AFTER TICKETS ARE ISSUED.

Book Discussion Group – Patricia McKay
The monthly meeting of the Carolina Shores Book Discussion Group was held on Friday, October 20. Each member gave a presentation on a nonfiction book that she had read. We all enjoyed the presentations, and as a result, many of us now have lists of more books we want to read!
We have also compiled our monthly reading list for 2023-2024. Each member was invited to submit one title to be included.
November: The Storied Life of A.J. Fikry by Gabrielle Zevin
December: Someone Else’s Shoes by Jojo Moyes
January: Our Missing Hearts by Celeste Ng
February: The Light Pirate by Lily Brooks-Dalton
March: Ruthless Tide by Al Roker and/or The Wager by David Grann
April: Carolina Moonset by Matt Goldman
May: Go as a River by Shelley Read
June: Behold the Dreamers by Imbolo Mbue
July: The Measure by Nikki Erlick and/or The Girls Who Stepped Out of Line by Mari K. Eder
August: Lessons in Chemistry by Bonnie Garmus and/or Mrs. Lincoln’s Rival by Jennifer Chiaverini,
September: Tom Lake by Ann Patchett and/or The Nurse’s Secret by Amanda Skenandore.
In some months, two books have been selected, and members may choose to read one or both titles.
Our next meeting will be held on Friday, November 17, at 10:00 a.m. in the large meeting room in the POA building.
Garden Club – Happy Mullen
The October meeting of the Carolina Shores Garden Club was held October 11 at the POA clubhouse. The guest speaker for October was Amy Mead, the area representative of Natural Resources and Environment, who spoke about which plants are most suited to our particular area. In addition, Amy spoke about the advantages of using native plants. Not only are they more likely to thrive, they generally require less water and are more pest resistant than plants that are popular in other areas.
November is a busy month for the garden club. The November 8 meeting at the clubhouse will feature a decoration making lesson. The annual Soup and Bake sale is Saturday, November 18, at the clubhouse, 17 Lakeside Court. Please plan to come and enjoy.
There are numerous events scheduled for the year, the Soup and Bake sale in November, a luncheon at Talk Of the Town in December, and a fundraising event in February. New members are always welcome! The meetings are the second Wednesday of each month, dues are $10 annually and meetings include a guest speaker, a plant raffle and a social hour. Please contact Mary Conover at 703-409-9612 with any questions.
Carolina Shores Quilters Group – Gloria Gustavson
We would like to extend an invitation to all past, present and future quilters to come and join us. We meet on the 2nd and 4th Fridays of the month. November dates are the 10th and the 24th. Time: 10:00 a.m. Place: Carolina Shores POA clubhouse. Any questions, call me at 910-297-0066.
Care Team – Flo Pflaster
Care Team Volunteers
I would like to update this list. As of now, there are 59 people who had let me know they would be available to help with neighbors’ needs at times. I get few responses, mostly from the same 3-4 people. So, if you no longer wish to be on this list, please text me at 910-368-1070 or email me at dfp324@atmc.net
If you would like to stay on this list and would prefer to get notifications by email instead of through Nextdoor, please email me at dfp324@atmc.net and I will send out a group email when someone needs help in our community.
If you need help, please continue to let me know by calling the above number or my home at 910-575-6243.
We have many volunteers on the Care Team, ready and willing to help our neighbors with temporary assistance. I will do whatever I can to find someone to help - all you need to do is call or email me!
I have learned about a great organization called Neighbor to Neighbor (n2ncarolina.org) (843) 839-0702.
They offer free rides to qualified people just as our CareTeam attempts to do, but with many more volunteers available to help. For information and to sign up for future needs, go to the website and click on “get involved” and then “be served” to fill out the form. Of course, I will continue to try and help our neighbors with the volunteers on my list, but this is an excellent option.
Thank you,

The Crenellas’ grew up in CT, but have lived in Concord, NC, Kansas, and Georgia. They would come to Myrtle Beach and Carolina Beach on vacations and knew they wanted to move to the shore when they retired. Like many others, they picked Carolina Shores because of the beauty of the mature trees in our area. Ann is now retired, but most recently worked as a deputy clerk in the Superior Court in Georgia. She enjoys crocheting, crafts, gardening, playing cards, and bowling. Rich is the project manager for an electrical contractor. In his spare time, he enjoys woodworking and bowling. They brought with them an adorable Yorkshire terrier named Peanut.
